Key takeaways
- On 28 October 2026, Google expanded ads in AI Mode to 10 more countries, including Australia, Canada, India, New Zealand and Singapore. The UK, Brazil and Mexico follow in Q4 2026.
- Multi-turn ads now launch in the US, so ads can appear in follow-up questions, not just the first search.
- Existing Search, Shopping and Performance Max campaigns are eligible automatically, with no new setup and no separate opt-out.
- AI Mode results are mixed into standard reports, so you cannot see AI Mode performance on its own.
- Broad match, AI Max and Performance Max get the widest reach; exact and phrase match only show for clearly commercial queries.
What are Google AI Mode ads? They are sponsored text and Shopping ads that appear inside or alongside Google’s AI-generated answers in AI Mode, labelled “Sponsored”. On 28 October 2026, Google took them beyond the US to 10 more countries and added multi-turn ads, which follow users through a conversation. For advertisers, AI search is no longer a test: it is part of every Search campaign.
What did Google announce on 28 October 2026?
Google revealed the expansion during Alphabet’s Q3 2026 earnings call. Chief business officer Philipp Schindler said Google is scaling ads in AI Overviews and AI Mode to more users and queries. Three changes matter most:
- Ten new markets: Australia, Canada, India, Kenya, Malaysia, New Zealand, Nigeria, Pakistan, the Philippines and Singapore now join the US.
- Multi-turn ads in the US: ads can now appear in follow-up questions within the same AI Mode conversation.
- More markets coming: Brazil, Mexico and the UK are planned for Q4 2026.
Google’s help documentation lists English as the only supported language for now, and Pakistan as text ads only.
Why is Google pushing ads into AI answers now?
Because search behaviour is shifting faster than search revenue. Alphabet’s Q3 Search revenue grew 12% year over year, down from 19% in Q1 2026. Meanwhile, Sundar Pichai said AI Mode queries are about three times longer than traditional searches, and one in five AI Mode searches now uses voice, images or documents.
Longer, conversational queries reveal more intent. That makes them valuable ad inventory, and Google says click-through rates on sponsored product listings in AI Mode are comparable to organic listings.
How do AI Mode ads work for advertisers?
There is nothing new to set up. Existing Search, Shopping and Performance Max campaigns enter the same auction, with the same cost-per-click or conversion-based bidding, and no extra charge. How far your ads reach depends on match type:
- Broad match, AI Max for Search, Shopping and Performance Max can match both the user’s query and the context of the AI answer.
- Exact and phrase match keywords only show on queries with direct commercial intent.
The catch is control. Advertisers cannot target AI Mode on its own, cannot opt out of it separately from Search, and cannot see AI Mode results as a separate report. Triggering queries appear only in aggregate in the search terms report.
Is ChatGPT also selling ads?
Yes. OpenAI began testing ads in ChatGPT in the US on 9 February 2026, then expanded to Canada, Australia and New Zealand, with pilots planned for the UK, Mexico, Brazil, Japan and South Korea. Ads show only to logged-in adults on the Free and Go tiers. OpenAI says ads do not influence ChatGPT’s answers and advertisers see only aggregate data, never chats. AI search advertising is becoming a two-platform market.
How should advertisers prepare for AI Mode ads?
- Audit broad match and AI Max: these drive most AI Mode reach. Test them with tight conversion goals rather than switching them on blindly.
- Strengthen negative keywords: contextual matching widens reach, so review the search terms report weekly and block irrelevant themes.
- Write ads that answer questions: AI Mode users ask full questions. Headlines that state a clear benefit, price or outcome fit best.
- Fix your product feed: Shopping ads in AI answers rely on accurate titles, prices, stock and reviews in Merchant Center.
- Match landing pages to intent: a three-times-longer query needs a page that answers that specific question, not a generic homepage.
- Measure on business outcomes: with no AI Mode segment, judge campaigns on conversions and revenue, not clicks or impressions.
- Keep investing in organic AEO: AI answers still cite websites. Clear, answer-first content earns visibility you do not pay for.
